Though it is clear that it is a demanding activity to be a leader, leaders who possess the traits enumerated above will have quite an advantage over those who do not. For example, someone who does not possess great drive will not be able to acquire the required expertise to lead effectively within an organization.

Someone who does not have a desire to lead will not be able to persuade others or motivate others to work to reach a common vision or goal. Such a person will either be indifferent or avoid leadership tasks. People may be selected from within or outside an organization based on possession of the traits as enumerated in the leadership trait theory. Some of the traits can be changeable or trainable while some are not so easily acquired. Cognitive ability, for example, is probably the least trainable of the traits.

Drive, though it can be somewhat constant over time, can change. It may be clearly observed in people who have been given enough responsibility and autonomy to be able to show what they are capable of doing. However, the desire to lead may not be easily observable especially in newly hired workers who may have had little chance for leadership. Other traits within the leadership trait theory like charisma, however, can be easily observed.

Organizations may be able to choose prospective leaders within or outside by utilizing tools which can aid in the detection of the less detectable traits as described within the leadership trait theory. Tools like the Myer’s Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI can help organizations identify employees who have the traits of effective leaders.

According to the leadership trait theory, leaders are born and not made. Regardless of whether it is true or not, it is clear that leaders differ from other people. Leadership can be unrelenting and demanding. The pressures can be great and the responsibilities enormous. The leadership trait theory clearly list what leaders may need to possess in order to be effective. Though there are elements within the leadership trait theory that may not be so easily learned, there are ways that potential leaders or people who desire to be leaders to do their utmost to develop the traits that will help them to lead and be effective at it.
